Ironman To Prevent Blindness

My name is Turner Schwartz and I am fourth year medical student. I am passionate about preserving eyesight and will be applying into Ophthalmology this year.
What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. It is a group of diseases in which the axons of the optic nerve die off causing decreased vision that can progress to blindness. Early in the disease, glaucoma often has no noticeable symptoms, but can lead to blindness over time. Current treatment targets lowering the pressure in the eye because high pressure can cause glaucoma. However, not all cases of glaucoma are due to high pressure, and thus treatment is usually inadequate in these cases. Further research is being conducted to better understand glaucoma to develop treatments and preventative therapies.
Who am I? and What is this Fundraiser?
I am a fourth-year medical student, and I am passionate about preserving vision and preventing blindness. I will be attempting to complete an Ironman triathlon on September 10th 2023 in Madison, Wisconsin. An Ironman triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike followed by a 26.2 mile marathon run. I am dedicating these miles, as well as the many miles in training, to preventing blindness. I am asking for your support to raise money for the Glaucoma Research Fund at the University of Pennsylvania. 100% of funds will go to glaucoma research.
